What is Psychiatric Medication Management?

Comprehensive Mental Health Support

Medication management involves assessing, monitoring, and prescribing medications to alleviate or stabilize symptoms of specific conditions. Psychiatric Medication Management focuses on managing mental health symptoms and disorders using evidence-based psychotropic medications like antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and antipsychotics when necessary. While not always required, these medications can help reduce cravings and prevent relapse in substance use disorders. Our experienced providers specialize in treating both mental health and substance use disorders in children, teens, and adults. Benzodiazepines are generally avoided due to their potential for abuse and increased Alzheimer’s risk.

When Should I Consider if/when taking Medication is right for me?

Consider medication if your mental health symptoms are impairing your daily life. Signs include difficulty getting out of bed, sleep issues, neglecting personal hygiene, or struggling with simple tasks. You might also isolate, lose interest in hobbies or work, or experience significant disruptions in your relationships. If these symptoms are affecting your life, it may be time to seek help. Medication can help regulate your condition and improve your quality of life.

Effective Treatment with Medication

Medication can be an effective part of the treatment of many mental illnesses such as:

Understanding Risks and Compatibility

If you question the risk of having bad side effects, we encourage you to ask your mental health provider to discuss how medication(s) may help your condition or how the medication may impact other areas of your life. A genesight (Pharmacogenomic) test or cheek swab can be done to see what, if any, medication may be more likely to cause a side effect and which one(s) may be most compatible with your body’s specific way of processing medications.

Importance of Follow-Up Visits

Follow-up visits with your provider are extremely important so that we can see how certain medications are working for you.   Sometimes patients stop taking a medication because they are feeling better or they may have experienced a side effect. Please consult with your provider prior to stopping your prescribed medication.   If you do not feel that a particular medication is working for you, do not stop taking it without consulting with your provider.  Your provider may consider prescribing a different medication for you.   Sometimes a provider may prescribe an additional medication to make another medication work harder, which is called augmenting.   Some mental health medications can cause withdrawal symptoms if you stop taking them suddenly, which is another reason to not stop a medication without first discussing it with your provider.

It is very important to talk with your family or close person about your symptoms, medication or any possible side effects.   Receiving support from trusted family members and/or friends is always helpful.   Please be sure to store any of your medications in a secure location out of the reach of children.
